Many of you may ask yourself this very question each school year when thinking about whether or not to pay the fee to join the athletic boosters. Many of you likely feel that you already pay enough to have your son/daughter participate in sports at BHS. Many of you contribute your time and money to the individual fundraisers for the specific sports that your son/daughter participates in and you feel that is all that you need to do. In a perfect world, you would be right. But unfortunately, in the times we live in, the financial support that public schools receive for extracurricular programs does not cover the costs. It is critical that families step up and help fill in the gaps in budgets so that all of our kids can have the very best that can be offered.
The truth of the matter is that, although each player pays a fee for each sport that they play, the large majority of that money goes directly to FCPS and does NOT stay at BHS. The athletic director has a budget to purchase uniforms and equipment for all of the sports but the money does not begin to cover all of the expenses for a given school year. It is often necessary for many of the sports to hold their own fundraisers to make up the difference. Many of the sports require the athletes to purchase their own equipment and some even have to purchase their own uniforms. Often coaches come to the boosters for additional financial support.
So, now the question is…what do the boosters do? We work VERY hard each year through various fundraisers (funnel cake stand at the Jefferson Carnival, selling spirit wear, concessions stands, fall & spring dinners, etc) to raise enough money to enhance the sports environment at BHS. The boosters do the little (and often the BIG) things to make being an athlete at BHS more special. We fund scholarships, we buy the chenille letters and pins that the varsity athletes are given, we stock the concession stands, we have subsidized the cost of the buses to playoff games, we’ve contributed to new scoreboards, we send coaches to clinics and banquets, and when we can (when we have the funds) we can help coaches and teams with their needs/wants. From 7/1/10- until 6/30/11 the athletic boosters paid for playoff buses, baseball scoreboard, BHS internet, silly bands, giveaways at football games, senior programs, weights for BHS weight room, chenille B letters, coaches to attend banquets, insurance, checks, new mums for the B in the stadium, ads in Brunswick Citizen, scholarships, etc.
If you are a booster member, we invite you to attend our monthly meetings and become more involved with our activities. If you are not a member, we hope you will consider the success of all of the BHS athletes as a worthwhile cause and will join the boosters.
The stronger the booster group….the stronger the athletic programs for ALL of the athletes. So, if you’re asking, “What do the boosters do?” The answer is that we give a BOOST to the athletes and the sports programs at our school.
